(1930–1992)
Shamshi Kaldayakov (15 August 1930 – 29 February 1992) was a composer, People’s Artist of Kazakhstan (1991) and Hero of Labour of Kazakhstan (2022, posthumously). He was an honorary citizen of Shymkent, Taraz and Zhetisay. He belonged to the Zhagalbayly clan of the Junior Zhuz.
A distinguished composer and renowned master of song, Kaldayakov was an honoured cultural figure in Kazakhstan and one of the founders of modern Kazakh popular music. From childhood, he demonstrated his talent at large public gatherings and musical competitions.
His beautiful melodies captured the hearts of not only young people but also older generations, people from different professions and members of diverse ethnic communities. His song Menıń Qazaqstanym (My Kazakhstan), which powerfully expresses patriotism and love for the homeland, became especially popular among the people.
In December 1986, young people who took part in the December events in Almaty sang this song in the city’s squares and streets, turning it into a symbol of national unity and the aspiration for freedom.
Since 2005, Menıń Qazaqstanym has served as the National Anthem of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
